About the band

Denise at the center

Denise Choate is the band's lead vocalist and the reason it sounds the way it does. Her voice is strong and expressive, at home in a swinging standard, a slow romantic ballad, a blues or a Latin tune. The band's arrangements start from her phrasing and leave room for the lyric.

The musicians around her

The Not Just Jazz Band brings accomplished jazz musicians together around Denise. Saxophonist Paul Contos appears in the band's quartet recordings. Denise has also appeared as a guest vocalist with the Columbia College Jazz Big Band at the State Theatre in Modesto.

Lineups range from a voice and keyboard duo to a quartet and larger groups. The musicians for each booking are confirmed when the date is set.

Local recognition

Denise Choate & The Not Just Jazz Band was nominated for Best Jazz Band at the Modesto Area Music Awards in 2025 and 2026.

What the evening sounds like

Jazz standards, Latin grooves, blues and romantic songs, paced for the room. At a winery or private dinner that might mean an easy, conversational volume; in a lounge or at a celebration, more swing and more energy.

Where the band fits

Private celebrations, wineries and tasting rooms, restaurants, cocktail bars and lounges, and corporate receptions throughout Northern California. Weddings are welcome too.
